Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins around the anus or the lower rectum. There are two types:

External hemorrhoids: They form under the skin around the anus.

Internal hemorrhoids: They form in the mucosa of the lower part of the anus and rectum.

Straining to have a bowel movement

Sitting on the potty/toilet seat for a long time.

Chronic constipation or diarrhea.

Low-fiber diet

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids? The symptoms of hemorrhoids depend on the type of hemorrhoids you have:

With external hemorrhoids, you may have:

Anal itching

One or more firm, tender lump near the anus.

Pain in the anus, especially when you sit down

Exercising, rubbing, or wiping around the anus can make symptoms worse. For many people, symptoms of external hemorrhoids go away within a few days. With internal hemorrhoids, you may have:

Rectal bleeding: you see bright red blood in your stool, toilet paper, or toilet seat after a bowel movement.

Prolapse: hemorrhoids protruding from the anus.

Internal hemorrhoids are usually not painful unless they prolapse. Prolapsed internal hemorrhoids can cause pain and discomfort.

Frequently asked questions about hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids located inside the rectum, while external hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that develop outside the rectum, around the anus. Both types of hemorrhoids become inflamed and painful. Although not usually a serious or life-threatening health problem, it can be accompanied by bleeding. Bleeding should be carefully evaluated to determine if it is due to hemorrhoids or another health problem.

Hemorrhoids tend to occur more frequently in men, although pregnancy acts as a trigger and may predispose women at certain times/ages.

Hemorrhoids can occur at any age. The usual range is between the ages of 20 and 50, although cases have also been reported in children.

Unfortunately, internal and external hemorrhoids are not mutually exclusive and can occur simultaneously. This presentation is known as “mixed hemorrhoids”.

If you have had hemorrhoids in the past, the risk of recurrence increases. But not all is lost: if you follow some hemorrhoid prevention tips, you can avoid it.
